How Attentiveness Makes Your Touch the Midas Touch

I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity more than once. Here are some observations.

The first thing you notice is that they aren’t anything like the mythical king for whom we name the “touch.” The god Dionysus granted Midas his wish that anything he touched turned to gold. softball associations “anything” included chariots, food, and people. This turned out to be an unexpected and unintended inconvenience.

However, mythology aside, some people do have the Midas touch. Like anything else in life, some of it is innate talent. Just as some are seemingly born to run, draw, sing, or tell jokes, some are born with a natural sense of making money.

However, talent alone rarely makes a big success in anything. The rest is drive, self-awareness, and attentiveness. This last point is hardly magical or granted from a Greek god.

Big success starts in earnest with big, bold thinking. However, it’s the little extra efforts and the seemingly insignificant instances of attentiveness that transform big thinking into big success.

Andrew Carnegie captured the essence of attentiveness and the role it plays in the Midas touch when he said, "Concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket."

This is how you transform “big, bold thinking” into the success after success so that others look at you and say, “You’ve got wifi camera Midas touch!” Attentiveness is important because it fosters improvements, necessary adjustments, and short-circuits growing problems before they turn into over-grown problems.

So what basket do you have your eggs in? If you want lots of eggs, concentrate on that basket and watch it carefully.

Lots of people have big, bold ideas. Very few are disciplined enough to concentrate their minds and attend to those big, bold ideas every day in little and seemingly insignificant ways. And even actions that seem insignificant matter.

The big, bold idea that sits around for a while without action of any kind doesn’t look as big and as bold as it once did.

So activate your Midas touch. Consider your “basket” and collection of “eggs” and ask these questions that I specifically designed to activate your personal Midas touch:

If I had the Midas touch, what little things would I do to remain attentive?

Look back over the business-related things you did in the last 24 hours. Would one with the Midas touch do these things? If so, would such a person do them as I did them? Or would this someone with the Midas touch pay more (or less) attention to them?

What little, attentive things could I do that I haven’t done that might accumulate over time and cause someone to say “You’ve got the Midas touch!”

Answer these questions, follow through, and the Midas touch will no longer be a story from mythology. It will be the story of your own success.
